Lake Como in a Full size? Or other recommendations in the San Luis?

We have tickets for the Rio Grande Scenic down at Fort Garland that we need to use this year. Medano Pass and Zapata falls are our normal camp spots when we are in the area but I was thinking it would make a good excuse to branch our to something different in the Sangre de Cristo Range. So I...

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

I was surprised myself when I saw the water coming up. I have crossed there before without a worry but this year there was a 30' long stretch of still water across the road. Not sure if there was some sort of blockage just down stream that hasn't been there before. There is a sign saying to...

The most efficient way to reheat leftovers. And our final stop was Black Canyon of the gunnison.

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

Then it was the alpine loop. I was advised against doing Mineral Creek in a full size but Engineer Pass did not disappoint. And Whitmore falls was a great place for lunch if you are up to the short but steep hike.

Ouray is one of my favorite towns. We did the perimeter trail, waterfalls, hot springs, more food and beer.....

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

A stop over in Durango. Highly recommend Carver Brewing and Steamworks. The bartender at Carver was good enough to can me some of their awesome barrel-aged barely wine. And the kids ran around the Durango Powerhouse Science center. It's small but it was great for them to get out some energy...

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

Then it was Mesa Verde where we did the Long house tour and the Cliff Palace tours. Ranger Night Eagle was our guide for Cliff Palace and treated us with a flute performance. It takes longer then you expect to get around Mesa Verde and the campground is at the entrance to the park.

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

We then hit the Cumbres Toltec steam train which the kids loved. And hit Pagosa Springs for a night in civilization. We stayed at the hotel at the springs which wasn't cheap BUT you get into the springs for free anytime, 24 hours. So after the kids were asleep the wife and I hung out in the...

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

We stopped by great sand dunes but without the creek flowing to the sand we moved on to Zapata Falls. And we stopped in Alamosa for beer and food at San Luis Valley Brewing Co.

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

I planned the trip so that we wouldn't be doing any wheeling on a weekend so we left on a Tuesday. Medano pass is one of our favorite places to camp out and we were able to grab a nice spot and luckily the Stage 1 fire restrictions still allowed for using the established fire rings. Our truck is...

Southwest Colorado trip, Medano Pass to the Alpine loop

I posted in the planning section a few months ago and we just wrapped up our trip through SW Colorado. We had to make a few adjustments for fires (no hiking the Chicago Basin from the D+S RR) but it was a great trip and everyone had fun. We did it in a little over a week and it was a packed...

SW CO trip in June; looking for Alpine loop recommendations

"The Alpine Loop in mid June is not going to get you away from people. " Very true. Sadly you can say that about a lot of Colorado these days...... I should have said in the alpine loop "area". We are going to do at least most of the loop and expect it will be busy. Also looking at other...

SW CO trip in June; looking for Alpine loop recommendations

Hi all, I am finishing up plans for a 1.5-2 week trip through south western Colorado and looking for some recommendations for the Alpine loop. We will be doing it in mid to late June and would be happy to meet up with other overlanders on the way. We will be doing half camping half hotels...

    2013 Silverado with Wildernest

Thanks. I signed up for the one in January. Hopefully it's more towards the south end of town so I can make it (live in down south in Parker). BTW, I read your eclipse trip report and we took almost the exact same trip and the same time. We have probably seen each other at dinosaur, vernal...

    2013 Silverado with Wildernest

Hi All, I bought the truck almost a year ago. It was a stripped worked truck with rubber floor mats and the manual transfer case and not much else. It's got a the 5.3L, 6 speed automatic (I do wish manual had been an option), and a factory locker in the rear. In the past year I have put a 3"...
